- JAXPORT employees collect 1,520 pounds of trash during North Jacksonville Earth Day clean-up
JAXPORT employees celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up trash along a two-mile stretch of Heckscher Drive in North Jacksonville on Friday, April 18, between the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal and the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal.
JAXPORT adopted this section of road in 2022 through the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program. Since then, the port has made it an annual Earth Day tradition to clean up the adopted stretch of roadway, which serves as an entrance to its nearby terminals.
Employees collected a total of 1,520 pounds of trash, including a car bumper, a boat fender, a hot water tank, a car seat, eight tires, and three engines.
“Our annual Earth Day cleanup is a way for us to give back and enhance the surrounding community,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “Since we adopted this section of road in 2022, our employees have removed more than 4,000 pounds of garbage, helping beautify the area while keeping discarded waste out of local waterways.”
From designing cargo terminals and adopting innovative technology to purchasing new equipment and reviewing operations, JAXPORT is committed to environmental protection and stewardship. JAXPORT is leading several efforts to preserve the region’s natural environment such as championing the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a clean marine fuel, reducing engine emissions from port equipment, and supporting ongoing efforts to protect manatees in Northeast Florida waterways.
