- JAXPORT supports North Atlantic right whale conservation
JAXPORT presented $5,000 to North Atlantic right whale conservation agency Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute during the 11th Annual Right Whale Festival held over the weekend in Fernandina Beach, Fla. JAXPORT has sponsored the festival since it began in 2008, and to date has awarded festival organizers more than $25,000 in support of research, surveying and monitoring of the endangered right whale and its local habitats.
The Right Whale Festival celebrates the annual return of endangered North Atlantic right whales to the warm coastal water off northeast Florida and Georgia, where they give birth to and nurse their young.
“It’s great to have an organization like JAXPORT that has been dedicated to the festival since we started more than a decade ago,” said Right Whale Festival organizer Cheryl Munday. “Support from our sponsors is what keeps us going and we couldn’t do what we do without these valuable partners.”
JAXPORT implements right whale protection measures each fall, including tenant notification of the beginning and end of right whale calving season, which runs Nov. 15-April 15. The port also encourages ship captains to pay careful attention to the Right Whale Early Warning System, which alerts mariners to the presence of right whales in the area.
From designing cargo terminals and using innovative technologies, to purchasing new equipment and reviewing operations, JAXPORT is committed to environmental protection and stewardship. Learn more at JAXPORT.com/Community.
